From Aluminum Machining to ASA: A Non-Contact 3D Scanning Success Story

A customer was machining this component from aluminum. For the application, that process was adding cost without adding the value the part actually needed. TECHNAST captured the existing part without coating, painting, or altering it; rebuilt it as editable CAD; and produced a durable ASA alternative matched to the project’s functional requirement.

The problem: aluminum machining was no longer the right answer

The customer’s parts had previously been machined from aluminum. That can be the right production route when a part truly needs metal’s specific properties, but it is not automatically the best answer for every component. Here, the goal was clear: retain the working geometry, keep the part strong, and reduce unnecessary cost.

Instead of treating the original metal part as a requirement, we treated it as data: capture the geometry, build an editable model, and select a material based on the real use case.

Non-contact 3D scanning: no paint, no damage

The customer supplied the physical part. TECHNAST completed the 3D scan without paint or scanning spray and without modifying or damaging the original. That creates a fast path from an existing component to accurate digital geometry while keeping the customer’s reference part intact.

From scan data to editable CAD

Scan data is the starting point, not the final deliverable. The captured geometry was rebuilt into CAD so the part could be evaluated, refined, reproduced, and changed later if the application evolves. For this project, the scan-to-CAD workflow was carried out to a ±0.01 mm accuracy requirement before production.

That distinction matters. A usable CAD model gives a business options: replacement parts, fit updates, small-batch production, and a dependable record of a component that may not have had original design files available.

Why ASA was selected

ASA was selected because it gives this application a practical balance of functional strength, toughness, heat resistance, and UV/weather resistance. It is a strong choice for many durable, real-world parts where the job does not require aluminum’s material properties or the cost of machining.

The right material is always application-specific. Load, temperature, chemical exposure, fastening method, and safety requirements should be reviewed before substituting any material. In this case, ASA met the customer’s request for a strong, cost-conscious replacement.
